Tips
- Instead of a small muffin, have 12 almonds and a large apple.
- Lavender has many uses: to ease headaches, menstrual pain, and
to lift a low mood. Use in the bath, as a massage oil, or in a
vaporizer.
- When feeling tired or drained, a couple of minutes of deep,
slow breathing increases oxygen flow to the brain and makes you
feel refreshed and more alert.
- Even 20 minutes of physical activity a day greatly increases
blood circulation and helps maintain muscle and bone mass.

Party in the Pool: The Joys of Aquafit
Water aerobics, or Aquafit, is becoming a very
popular form of low impact exercise. It makes a refreshing change
from land aerobics and the benefits are immense.
Benefits:
Aquafit classes are fun and social events that help reduce stress,
increase strength and flexibility, speed up your metabolism and
promote good body weight loss and management. Due to its low impact
nature, people of all ages and various fitness levels can easily
participate. It is also an ideal form of exercise for women during
postpartum.
Aquafit is a doctor recommended form of exercise activity for people
with back and knee problems and provides all the variety of a cross-training/cardiovascular
program.
Preparation and Equipment:
It’s extremely easy! Grab a bathing suit/Aquatard (something
with a higher neck line and bust support), a towel and you’re
good to go. Some people doing shallow-water classes like to wear
Aquafit shoes to help get a better push and extra support for their
arches. It is very important to bring along a water bottle, as you
must keep hydrated during your workout. It literally is “water,
water everywhere, but not a drop to drink”.
Which class is for you?
There are a wide variety of classes and styles of Aquafit to choose
depending on your needs.
- Shallow-water classes offer a great general workout and provide
good cross training for runners and cyclists.
- Deep-water classes are completely no impact and focus on the
full body. This offers a similar workout one would get from jogging
or spinning.
- Water walking focuses more on the legs.
- Waterworks is a specialty class designed for people with arthritis
and rheumatic diseases, with very specific exercises employed.
Most classes run one hour and remember to try
a combination, as it’s always good to mix it up a bit.
Where to find classes:
Most public pools and community centers do offer some type of Aquafit
class. Ask at a location close to you.
Kim, is a BCRPA certified fitness trainer,
and has taught Aquafit classes at Surrey Sports and Leisure, and
Fitness 2000 in Burnaby.
